The field visit to the Sani-clean Biomedical Waste Facility, organized by faculty member Elizabeth Abba for the Solid Waste Management course, significantly enhanced students’ understanding of safe and effective biomedical waste disposal techniques. Under Pramod’s guidance, students were introduced to the entire biomedical waste incineration process. They observed how waste, including infectious materials, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste, is carefully segregated and prepared before being subjected to controlled combustion in the incinerator. The functioning of key components, including primary and secondary combustion chambers, as well as pollution control devices such as scrubbers and filters, was demonstrated to ensure efficient combustion and minimal emissions of harmful pollutants. Detailed discussions highlighted how incineration helps destroy pathogens and significantly reduces hazardous waste volume. Students also gained insights into the strict legal regulations and safety protocols governing biomedical waste management. This visit provided a comprehensive understanding of how proper treatment and disposal of biomedical waste are essential for protecting environmental and public health, leaving students with a deeper awareness of responsible waste management practices.
